In the darkness of her bedroom, Jenna peered at the text from Peggy. The screen on her phone glowed brightly in the dark and announced the time as three a.m. Peggy was still awake and sitting at Shawn’s bedside. All his tests so far checked out negative for any long-lasting damage, but the doctors planned to run additional neurological exams in the morning. On the bright side, he’d asked for help with his addiction—something Jenna felt immense relief over—and they’d started him on an opioid replacement therapy, so he was resting comfortably.

Jenna owed Peggy so very much and told her so in her reply to the text. But Jenna wanted to do more. She needed to find a way to repay this very generous woman. But how? That was the question Jenna had to answer. Couldn’t be anything that cost much. She’d have to keep thinking about it.

Her thoughts turned to Shawn. Had her prayers for him finally been answered? Would this be the time that he kicked the habit? She hoped so, but right now she just needed to embrace the fact that he came back from the overdose.

And without the negativity in Karlie’s life now, she could grow into a well-adjusted adult without all the baggage Jenna and Shawn carried. To become someone like the Byrd siblings, who seemed comfortable in their skin. She wasn’t dumb enough to think they didn’t have problems, but she could never see one of them berating a child as Toby had done.

The sight of Brendan reading to Karlie came to mind. Her little body snuggled up against his powerful arm. The juxtaposition of big tough guy and his gentle care of Jenna’s adorable little girl was almost more than Jenna could handle. He would be a good father. She knew that innately. But he’d also demonstrated that in his gentle and considerate actions. And yet, no matter her attraction to him, no matter his displayed kindness, she still didn’t know if she wanted a man in her life right now. She wanted to prove she could stand on her own two feet. Not just subsist on the social security checks as they were doing now, but make her own way in the world.

But did she want that if it meant Karlie missed out on having a father? On not having a
